I felt like having an apple cake so was looking for something which tastes good but also looks nice. I found this recipe here and I loved it. It is different from other apple pies and cakes which I made before. Nutmeg and clove give it a special taste and I like it. Enjoy!
Ingredients for the dough:
250 g flour
125 g butter
2-3 egg yolks
2 tbsp sugar
Pinch of salt
Mix all the ingredients and knead the dough till it is smooth, non-sticky and not too hard. Divide it in 2 and set it aside to rest.
1 kg apples
½ cup sugar
½ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp ground nutmeg and clove
1 tbsp butter
Peel the apples and divide them in quarters.
Melt the butter in the pan, put the apples in it and fry for a short while stirring. When they start to become softer, add sugar and spices. Fry them till they fall apart and then cool down.
Baking tin (for example Ø26 cm or smaller, then the pie will be higher) coat with butter and sprinkle with flour.
Line the form with one half of the dough (very thin layer). Poke with a fork and bake for 10 minutes in 190˚C (preheated oven).
Take it out of the oven; place the prepared apples on it. The rest of the dough roll out, cut into stripes and arrange it on the apples. Brush it with egg white.
Bake in 190˚C for 40 minutes (make sure you do not over bake it). The time of baking depends on the oven and the size of the tin.
Cool down and sprinkle with icing sugar.
